"Make Music ... Not War" Band Cabaret

27 July 2015

“Make Music … Not War” - The City of Greater Dandenong Band certainly made music for their annual cabaret concert held at the Springvale Town Hall on Saturday 27th June. Once again the band delivered a spectacular and entertaining night of music, dancing, singing, and video presentations to an audience of almost 300.

This year’s theme, “Make Music … Not War”, was a huge success! The audience was encapsulated by the music and visual performances throughout the show. In the first half, the audience was encouraged to reminisce in the past with songs that depicted the ANZACs and war over the last 100 years. Songs including; 1914, A Nightingale in Berkeley Square, M*A*S*H, Dam Busters, and Here’s to the Heroes…just to name a few!

The audience were particularly captivated by Nightfall in Camp, featuring soloist, Damien Lord and a powerful reading by Michael Mathers. This haunting rendition saw the audience silenced at the end of the piece by what was a very powerful and moving performance. Another favourite in the first half was the cornet trio Bugler’s Holiday, featuring our two oldest players Bruce & Alan Collard and our president Timothy Hellyer, this piece was upbeat and showcased their many years of experience!

In the second half of the cabaret the audience were encouraged to tap along to numerous big swing charts from the war era ... kicking it off with an exciting performance of Sing, Sing, Sing! Some of the other charts included; Little Brown Jug, Glenn Miller Special, In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, Colonel Bogey…and many more. There was even a special guest appearance by the Andrews Sisters (our very own Cassi De Lacy-Vawdon, Stephanie Gilfedder and Catherine Hillman). They blessed the audience with their beautiful vocals and dancing routine with the ever popular Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.

In a magnanimous gesture, the band decided all proceeds from the raffle and scone sales were to be donated to Legacy. This saw just under $1000 raised and the band is most honoured to donate the funds to this very worthy cause.

The cabaret could not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the Cabaret Committee, whose efforts are greatly appreciated. Overall the band’s 5th annual cabaret was a huge success and a great night was had by all. Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the band and Legacy. Look out for updates on the 2016 cabaret with the theme to be announced shortly!
