A NEW BAND IN TOWN!

29 May 2017

Ever wanted to learn music and play with a band? A new brass band is coming to Springvale! The City of Greater Dandenong Band has started a second band, and is inviting anyone (aged 8 and up) of any musical ability to join us for a fun-filled community who will perform in and around the Dandenong area.

Commencing in late April, they run weekly rehearsals for those ready to play. For those with little or no musical training, lessons can be provided lessons on brass instruments and percussion to get you started. They also have a limited number of instruments for hire, for those who cannot afford to purchase them.

The existing Dandenong Band has served the local community almost continuously since 1885. We perform regularly at civic events across this region, including the annual Dandenong ANZAC Day march, RSL events and community Christmas Carols. They also compete regularly in competitions across the country, and hold the very popular annual Dandenong Band Cabaret in Springvale Town Hall.

In addition to playing music together, the band has a strong community feel. Musical Director of Dandenong Band, Michael Mathers, says "Sharing my time with other like-minded people is what gives me most joy in my brass banding life".

The new conductor of Springvale Brass, our very own Todd O’Shea, has been involved in several brass bands across Victoria and Tasmania for over 30 years and relishes the challenge of his new directorship role. “I am looking forward to working with a new generation of musicians and continuing to build the strong community feel of the band.”

Springvale Brass will meet weekly during school terms, with rehearsals running Wednesdays 6.30-7.30pm. Initially, these will be run at the Dandenong Community Arts Centre, directly opposite 27 Robinson Street Dandenong. However, we hope to move to our own venue in Springvale South later in the year.

While there is a nominal fee charged, they are offering payment plans and other assistance to those who need them. The band is an inclusive community and welcomes anyone who wants to participate.
