Forgotten Warrior Memorial Dedication

30 August 2015

Thank you to everyone that attended the Forgotten Warrior Memorial dedication at Cranbourne RSL today.

This memorial is a very important one. It has been created in the belief that those who die in training to defend this nation, die in the uniform and the service of this nation, and as such should be remembered, and honoured.

There are, unfortunately many such accidents and incidents, and the victims can sometimes be forgotten. They should not be. This memorial, will be an evolving one with room for names to be added as they are discovered. So far the RSL has collated about 300 names of fallen trainees through newspaper archives.

The center-piece is a Macchi MB326H aircraft that served first with the RAN and then the RAAF. It is in RAN colours because that is where it first served, but the main significance is that a number of young pilots lost their lives in accidents with this somewhat troubled aeroplane. Relatives of some of those young men were with us at the dedication today.

Thank you to the Dandenong Cranbourne RSL, Young Veterans, City of Casey, and also all City of Greater Dandenong Band members, especially Steph Gilfedder for your beautiful vocals, Steph and David Martin for conducting, and Dave Barker for helping out today.
