MADDI MATHERS
Second Cornet
Maddi is the youngest member of the City of Greater Dandenong Band, joining the band in 2013 at the tender age of 12. The third generation of Mathers' to play in brass bands Maddi follows in the footsteps of her grandfather Ian Mathers B.E.M and her father, Dandenong Band's current Musical Director, Michael. In addition Maddi's mother was also an accomplished cornet and trumpet player playing with the Victorian State Youth Band and both Kew Band and Dandenong Bands over the years.
In addition to her skills as a cornet and trumpet player Maddi is a talented vocalist and performer having starred in the lead role of Alice (Alice in Wonderland) of her school production in 2012. This was followed by a major leading role as Miss Hannigan in last year's production of Annie and will again this year feature as one of the Corny Collins Dancers in her school's production of Hairspray.
Maddi began her singing career at the age of 8 as a member of the St. Paul's, Canterbury choir, a local church choir known for its high standard. She was also enrolled in the Young Australian Broadway Chorus (YABC) for a couple of years and has also had vocal coaching from Matt Hillman (Hillbilly Productions). As a result of this coaching Maddi successfully auditioned for a place in the performing arts stream of Luther College, Croydon where she was offered a full Performing Arts Scholarship.
As well as the Performing Arts Scholarship, she also auditioned for the trumpet scholarship (under the tutelage of her father) and again was successful in being offered a full Music Performance Scholarship. Having to choose only one of the two on offer, her parents made her take the latter.
Maddi's growth as a musician continues with her brass playing playing a major, but not the sole, role.
Maddi hopes to one day own and run her own café.
